Pine Needle Cleaning 🌲: Healthy Little Eaters and Their Natural Secret!
👉 As part of the Healthy Little Eaters program, A Junior students embraced an innovative role: creating their own eco-friendly cleaner using pine needles and vinegar. This hands-on activity combined scientific knowledge, ecological awareness, and creativity while giving students the opportunity to explore the power of natural materials in a practical and responsible way.
🌿 Pine Needles: A Natural Treasure
The primary material for this activity, pine needles, contains essential oils with potent antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. Key components of these oils include:
📌 Pinene (α- and β-pinene): A terpene-based organic compound with proven antiseptic and deodorizing properties, effective in eliminating microorganisms and odors.
📌 Limonene: Known for its fresh, citrusy scent, limonene has antibacterial and grease-dissolving properties, making it ideal for cleaning greasy surfaces.
📌 Borneol: A natural alcohol with anti-inflammatory effects and mild antiseptic qualities.
📌 Camphene: Offers disinfectant properties and aids in eliminating germs.
🍃 Why Are Pine Needles Effective?
These components work together to create a natural mixture that neutralizes bacteria and fungi while leaving a pleasant natural aroma. Furthermore, pine needles are a sustainable resource, as they are forest byproducts, allowing us to utilize natural materials without harming the environment.
📍 The Cleaner-Making Process
The activity followed a step-by-step process, allowing students to actively participate:
🌱 Collecting Pine Needles: Students gathered pine needles, examining their texture and scent.
🌱 Placing in Jars: The needles were placed in glass jars, where students observed how vinegar begins to interact with the natural oils.
🌱 Adding Vinegar: Students learned that the acetic acid in vinegar acts as a strong cleaning agent while extracting the active substances from the pine needles.
🌱 Maturation Period: Students were informed that the mixture needs to sit for three weeks, during which the essential oils are extracted from the pine needles.
👉 The Final Product
After the maturation period, the cleaner was ready for use. Students filtered the mixture and transferred it to reusable bottles, completing the process.
♻️ In this way, they learned how to use natural materials in an environmentally responsible manner while understanding the importance of science in everyday life.
✔ The natural cleaner they created is a practical testament to how nature can provide cleaning solutions, reducing the need for chemical products.

Bird Feeders with Orange Peels: A Lesson in Nature, Nutrition, and Sustainability! 🦉
🌺 Our Healthy Little Eaters continued their hands-on activities, this time creating bird feeders from orange peels. First, the children squeezed the oranges and enjoyed the fresh juice. Then, we used the peels to craft the bird feeders. We pierced them with straws, tied them with string, and added bird seeds. The children then took their feeders home to hang and help birds find food. 🍃
🍂 Before starting the craft, we worked with our own educational material in English, learning basic vocabulary about nature, birds, and recycling materials. In this way, the children combined experiential learning with improving their language skills. 🌿
🍁 This activity is important on many levels. First and foremost, it teaches children the importance of sustainability and reusing materials. By turning "waste" from the squeezed orange into something useful for birds, they understand how important it is to find creative solutions to protect the environment. 🌳
🦜 Additionally, the children learn about animal care and empathy, as by making these feeders, they provide food for birds, especially during winter when finding food is more challenging. In this way, they become aware of the cycle of nature and the role humans play in caring for animals and the environment. 🦆
🍎 The lesson in healthy eating doesn't end there. Through the process of consuming fresh juice, the children learn about the nutritional value of fruits, and it reinforces the importance of eating fruit in their daily lives. 🍏
🔝 Finally, this activity promotes responsible consumption and helps children understand how small daily actions can have a big impact on nature and society. The bird feeders they created are not just tools for birds but an opportunity to see the practical value of their knowledge and actions. ❤🙏

Insect Hotel: Learning About Nature, Empathy, and Nutrition in English! 🇬🇧
🍎 As part of World Food and Nutrition Day, our Healthy Little Eaters continued their eco-friendly actions by building an insect hotel. This activity aimed to help children better understand the living conditions of insects, their crucial role in nature, and
the importance of protecting them.
🐝 Insects, such as bees and ladybugs, are essential for pollination and preserving biodiversity, which directly affects the cultivation of our food. By creating a "home" for these creatures, children develop empathy for the world around them, realizing that
all creatures, big and small, have their role in the ecosystem.🪲
🦗 Before building the hotel, we took the time to learn more about insects and their environment, using our own educational material in English. The children became familiar with related vocabulary and watched videos from National Geographic and Discovery Channel,
which helped them better understand the significance of insects in nature.🐜
🪳 Through this activity, children not only gain knowledge but also develop environmental awareness and empathy, learning to care for the planet and the creatures living on it. Building the insect hotel allows them to put into practice what they've learned,
bridging the gap between theory and action.

Cultivating Food and Raising Environmental Awareness: Seed Balls for World Food Day.
🍏 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
👉 As part of World Food Day, our #Healthy_Little_Eaters (www.healthylittleeaters.gr) are participating in a significant ecological action by making seed balls with vegetable seeds. The aim of this activity is to raise children's awareness about the concept of sustainable food cultivation and to give them the opportunity to understand the importance of nutrition for both humans and the planet.
🟤 Seed balls are a simple yet effective reforestation and cultivation technique that has been used by environmental activists around the world. The balls, made from soil, clay, and seeds, keep the seeds safe until they find suitable conditions to germinate. In our case, the vegetable seeds we use are directly connected to the message of World Food Day, emphasizing the need to grow and consume healthy and sustainable foods.
🌱 Growing our own vegetables is not only a way to connect with nature but also a means to promote healthy eating. Locally grown vegetables are rich in nutrients, without the chemicals often used in industrial food production. Through this activity, our children learn the value of sustainability, understanding that the earth's resources are limited and that responsible use is essential for ensuring the food of the future.
♻️ At the same time, this action promotes environmental awareness. Seed balls help improve soil quality, enhancing biodiversity and land productivity, which is crucial for maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Growing vegetables using this method reduces the environmental footprint of food production and contributes to creating a more sustainable world.
🙏❤ In this way, our students actively participate in an initiative that promotes healthy eating, sustainable cultivation, and care for the planet.

Traditional food or drink industries are like time machines , their owners are their captains and they travel us to another era when everything used to be immaculate, thus, creating memories to young and old alike.
